I am completely baffled why some people seem to be choosing Mastodon over Micro.blog

It is completely baffling to me that a lot of people seem to be choosing Mastodon over Micro.blog as an alternative to Twitter lately. At least among tech geeks on Twitter anyway. I admittedly do not know a lot about Mastodon but it seems confusing AF to set up by all accounts and may be just yet another social network, and one that may disappear or shut down at some point. To each their own though.

Micro.blog in contrast, is a paid (meaning sustainable) indie blog hosting service first, and a social network second IMO, that is easy to set up and built for the open/indie web, built with portability in mind, and built on top of blogs and domains people own themselves, using RSS/JSON. Simple and future proof. Blogs, personal domains, and RSS/JSON are not going anywhere. It is not trying to be another Twitter or just another social network. It has been built from the start with community safety and civil discourse in mind, using Safe Replies and strong community guidelines to combat abuse, harassment, hate speech and violence.

Here is how Manton Reece, who is awesome and created the service explains why he created Micro.blog - Why I Created Micro.blog and what the difference is between Micro.blog and Twitter

And the blurb about Micro.blog on the home page -

Today’s social networks are broken. Ads are everywhere. Hate and harassment are too common. Fake news spreads unchecked.

There’s a better way: a network of independent microblogs. Short posts like tweets but on your own web site that you control.

Micro.blog is a safe community for microblogs. A timeline to follow friends and discover new posts. Blog hosting built on open standards.

Here is Brent Simmons thoughts on it -

”Micro.blog is not an alternative silo: instead, it’s what you build when you believe that the web itself is the great social network.”

Consider trying Micro.blog people! It is awesome! It is a the best blogging hosting service I have ever found, with a great and safe community of awesome people if you are into that sort of thing. And again it is built on blogs and domains you own with open/indie web tools and principles and RSS/JSON. I ❤️ blogs, the indie web and RSS/JSON and you should too. Try it!
